Abstract

Higher plants possess a myriad of adaptive mechanisms for surviving a variety of abiotic and biotic stresses. No single volume or symposium can ever attempt to review this extensive subject in detail. By focusing on the phytochemical responses — specifically the effects of stress on plant secondary metabolites — this symposium has delineated a specific aspect of this important subject. A broad review of the effects of certain types of stresses on the production of secondary metabolites in whole plants and tissue cultures is discussed in two chapters of this volume. These reviews are supplemented by other chapters describing specific types of stresses on the fate of selected metabolites.
