Abstract

Commercial micropropagation of orchids in Thailand started in the year 1972–1973. Since then, business has been very prosperous and expanding rapidly. The industry now produces 30 million plantlets and employs more than 300 workers distributed among 15 laboratories around the country. The estimated gross turnover of tissue culture propagated plants is of the order of US $ 2.4 million. Orchids successfully multiplied on a commercial scale include Aracluiis, Cattleya, Dendrobium, Vanda and their intergeneric hybrids. The market is basically export-oriented. The hardened plants are exported to Japan, USA and Europe. Few plantlets are grown locally for the cut flower industry.
