Abstract
In the past decade one of the most important technological innovations in the analytical laboratory has been the widespread introduction of computers. This has followed the development of low-cost computer hardware, especially the ubiquitous personal computer or PC. For a few thousand dollars the laboratory can now purchase computing power which formerly would have cost hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.
