Abstract
The study of neuroanatomy is at once a descriptive system of classification and a dynamic field of scientific inquiry. There are probably many reasons for applying names and descriptions to the (initially) subtle variations of the texture of the brain, not the least of which is man’s apparently ancient penchant for naming and classifying the objects in his environment. But there are relatively few aspects of man’s environment that have been named and classified to such an extent as has the brain. It is, therefore, fair to question the reasons for this degree of attention.
