Abstract
During the past several years, our laboratory has sought compounds that would antagonize actions of ethanol. This strategy was undertaken not only to study putative amethystic agents (Erickson, 1979), but also to provide information about biological mechanisms by which ethanol alters central nervous system (CNS) function. Thus, if a putative antagonist were found that altered all actions of ethanol, it might be possible to link the effects of ethanol to a single neurobiological mechanism. Furthermore, if the pharmacological actions of the antagonist were well enough defined, predictions could be made concerning specific neural mechanisms intrinsic to specific actions of ethanol. The research described will use this general perspective, and focus on studies that were conducted to examine the effects of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) against ethanol.
