The DR Region of HLA

Serological Analysis

Current Trends in Histocompatibility

Abstract

Following the finding by van Leeuwen et al. (1973) that antisera that blocked mixed-lymphocyte reactivity (MLR) were reactive with only a small proportion of blood lymphocytes, many other investigators have developed methods for examining and categorizing the antigen(s) involved. These antigens are present on B lymphocytes and have been designated HLA-DR for HLA-D related. Technical developments include the removal of antibodies to HLA-A, -B and -C allelic products by absorption with platelets that do not have DR (B-cell) antigens (van Rood et al., 1975a) and enrichment of the lymphocyte population for “B” lymphocytes by adsorption onto anti-F(ab’)2-coated surfaces (Mage et al., 1977; Grier et al., 1977), differential sedimentation after rosetting T lymphocytes with sheep red cells (van Rood et al., 1975a; Terasaki et al., 1978), or differential adherence to nylon wool (Danilovs et al., 1979; Lowry et al., 1978).
