The Stereochemical Approach to Studies of the Origin of the Genetic Code

  • Chapter
Molecular Evolution and Protobiology

Abstract

Since Wohler’s synthesis of urea in the early nineteenth century, organic molecules have been displaced from their previously exalted position as the result of some special vitalistic process, and have taken their rightful place in the toolbox of the chemist and biologist. In studies of the origin of life, it becomes of paramount importance to determine the molecular parameters which define living systems from nonliving ones.
