Abstract
Even though renal blood flow is re-established after ischemia in the rat kidney, a cellular swelling, particularly in the straight portion of the proximal tubule, persists and an early, important step in the development of acute tubular necrosis is established (Frega et al., 1976; 1979). This ischemic cell-swelling, due to an unbalanced osmotic activity of intracellular macromolecules, may be counteracted by a reduction of the transmembrane gradients for sodium and potassium ions and by the presence of poorly permeable molecules in the inter-stitium (Sacks et al., 1971; Frega et al., 1979).
