Abstract

The areas of thermodynamics with which this book is concerned are those dealing with the interrelationships of energy and the changes in properties of matter upon mixing various components to form various phases. A component in this book is usually a pure element, but occasionally it may be an intermetallic or a metal-metalloid compound of well-defined stoichiometry. A single phase is a substance that has uniform physical and compositional properties. At a phase boundary these properties change abruptly.
