Phenomena Dependent on O₂ Transport Waiting for Isott Input

Abstract

It may seem anachronistic for a physiologist to address a meeting of molecular biologists. Yet, it seems to me not wholly out of place to recall a fact that tends to be lost sight of these days in the enthusiasm of discovery of one molecular mechanism after another: ultimately molecular mechanisms will have to be brought back to intact animals and, indeed, to more or less intact man if they are to be fully utilized. With this in mind one important task for those of us who have been concerned with regulation and performance of various functions in intact animals will be to try to push our explorations to the point where we have enough understanding of certain phenomena to invite those colleagues concerned with biological processes at the molecular level to complete the analysis.
