Abstract
Second trimester abortion techniques have varied during the past century, but current practices are essentially refinements of methods practiced for decades. Anecdotal accounts from both Europe and the United States indicate that 19th century and early 20th century physicians employed surgical evacuation of the uterus by various instruments; laminaria was used in the 19th century but abandoned due to the risks of infection.
