Abstract
The site of action by which estradiol triggers the preovulatory LH surge varies widely among species. In sheep (Clarke and Cummins, 1984), cattle (Kesner et al., 1981) and rats (Fink, 1979), estradiol is thought to sensitize the pituitary to gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation and then to accelerate the secretion rate of GnRH. In primates, estradiol stimulates the pituitary directly to occasion the LH surge (Knobil, 1980). Herein we report the effect of the pharmacological block of central nervous system (CNS) inputs on the estradiol-induced LH surge in gilts, and describe the dynamic changes in pituitary responsiveness to GnRH after estradiol exposure.
