Abstract

Interest in pediatric organ donation and organ retrieval has been focused in part because of a perception that there are not enough pediatric organs for needy pediatric recipients. This chapter discusses the number of patients waiting for various organs and the number of pediatric donors available. It will be shown that there are more individuals of all ages waiting for organs than there are organs available. This is currently easily demonstrable for patients waiting for kidney transplants. It also appears true for other organ transplants. The problem is particularly severe for pediatric patients, and it is going to get worse.
