Abstract

The diverse physiologic functions which are altered following the intravenous injection of inert particles, have imposed, a priori, on the reticuloendothelial system (RES) a significance which belies its morphological appearance. This is exemplified by the striking increase in the sensitivity of several species of animals to the lethal effects of endotoxin when given within a definite interval of time after the intravenous injection of colloidal material [1]. Since the majority of these colloidal particles are phagocytized by the fixed reticuloendothelial cells of the liver and spleen, it has been suggested [2] that the functions of the RE cells are impaired for a variable period of time due to the presence of a mass of inert material contained within their cytoplasm. Blockaded RE cells would be temporarily unable to phagocytose additional foreign material such as endotoxins.
