Abstract
For many reasons the research into the inequalities of school success in relation to social origin has been led to take into consideration children’s verbal behaviour. At first researchers tried to discover the “characteristics” of the language spoken by children from a particular social circle. They thought that it would provide an explanatory “variable”. It became rapidly clear that to analyse the functioning of speech in a relevant manner it was necessary to take into consideration the production situation. In fact if the situations are diversified, it can be noticed that the child has no own language but that he makes a different use of his mother language according to the constraints of the situation in which he finds himself (Robinson, 1965; Lanton 1969; Cazden 1972).
