Abstract

Denervation interrupts, reinnervation and regeneration recovers the metabolic interaction between nerve and muscle cells. Whatever the nature of this interaction (1,2) in old age, it is clearly exposed by the related changes in the motor, units, defined by Sherrington (1919) as the population of muscle fibres innervated by a single neuron. Studies on “senile motor units” (3) rest on observations of a close correlation between physiological and biochemical properties of muscle fibres innervated by the same nerve cell (4,5). The differential behaviour of fast and slow muscles and muscle fibres is demonstrated especially by, studies on contraction and histochemical properties of fast and slow muscles and muscle fibres which exhibit high or low speed of contraction and a related degree of ATPase activity (Type II muscle fibres with high activity and Type I with low activity) (6), and mostly a different degree of oxidative enzyme activity (7) (A, B, and C fibres). This differentiation is more refined, when based on ultrastructural studies (8,9), but it is sufficient as a basic means of classification.
