Abstract

The microstructure of the annealed alpha-beta titanium alloy Ti-6A1-4V consists of the alpha phase of 82 per cent and the beta phase of 18 per cent, and shows the various types such as the primary alpha structure, transformed beta structure and so on, depending upon the conditions of heat treatment and deformation. It is thought, therefore, that the mechanical properties of this alloy are largely dependent upon the microstructure, particularly the shape of the alpha phase. Since the shape and the amounts of various alpha grains vary by the heat treatment, the effect of the heat treatment before the final annealing was investigated using two kinds of materials with the primary alpha structure.
