The Technological Aspects of Titanium Application in the TU-144 Aircraft Structure

  • Chapter
Titanium and Titanium Alloys

Abstract

Ten years ago when our experimental design bureau initiated the design of the TU-144, the decision was made for the widespread use of titanium in its construction. At this time, neither we nor perhaps anyone in the world had the necessary experience or knowledge to permit reliable operation of titanium in a commercial aircraft structure with a lifetime of 30,000 flight hours. On the contrary, both practice and the literature were filled with examples of the “insidious” behavior of titanium in aircraft with even low safe-life.
