Abstract

Behavioral synthesis is a just-emerging computer-aided design technology. Working at a higher level of abstraction, these tools have the capability of exploring design alternatives that are more far-reaching than found in logic synthesis. From a cycle-accurate specification they design and optimize a datapath and the finite state machine controlling it. This chapter overviews behavioral synthesis, presents the cycle accurate method of specification, and illustrates how to specify systems for design using behavioral synthesis.
