Part of the book series: Applied Mathematical Sciences ((AMS,volume 159))

Abstract

This chapter is concerned with the study of model problems in incompressible fluid and solid mechanics. As opposed to the previous chapter, we now deal with PDEs that are not endowed with a coercivity property. The prototypical situation is that of the Stokes problem modeling incompressible fluid flows at low Reynolds number. More generally, we are concerned with mixed problems in which two dependent variables (say pressure and velocity) play different roles. As a consequence, we are led to approximate the two variables in different finite element spaces.
