Abstract
The application of digital signal processing to communications systems is very dependent on the availability of high-speed computer resources at reasonable cost, small size, and moderate to low power. Fortunately, the development of very large scale integration (VLSI) has progressed at a near explosive rate during the last decade, and systems that seemed impractical just a few years ago have become very reasonable to implement. Rapid progress in the hardware area is likely to continue in the foreseeable future, so systems and algorithms that we hardly dare to consider today may become commonplace in just a few years.
