Abstract
In many tropical climates the pattern of rainfall differs greatly from that in temperate regions. In particular, rainfall intensity in some areas is very much higher than in temperate climates, while in others the annual quantity and distribution of rain can be such that profitable agriculture is not possible without irrigation. These two features, high rainfall intensity and irrigation, can lead to drainage problems specific to these areas. This chapter examines drainage design for erosion control in areas of high rainfall intensity and for the control of waterlogging and salinity in irrigated arid and semiarid areas.
