Abstract

The test procedure ASTM D 3039 was written to generate Resin Matrix Composite (RMC) tensile properties under ambient temperature conditions. However, when this procedure was applied to unidirectional graphite/epoxy tape laminates at cryogenic temperatures problems arose. General Dynamics Space Systems Division (GDSS) has developed an alternate specimen design to be used at cryogenic temperatures. This paper explains the methodology, analysis and results to proof the new specimen concept.
