Angle Measurement by Geometric Polarisation Rotation in a Fibre Loop Reflector

Summary

A combination of bends and twists can rotate the state of polarisation of light in standard single mode optical fibre [1]. It has previously been proposed to use the effect to measure rotation angle [2], but there were practical difficulties due in part to the need for a linearly polarised optical input. By incorporating the rotator in a fibre loop reflector [3], an elegant angle sensor has now been designed which is independent of input polarisation state and which delivers the output as optical intensity. The paper describes the theory of operation and an experiment to verify the sensor design.
