The Alcoholic Personality

  • Chapter
Social Aspects of Alcoholism

Abstract

It is generally agreed that personality factors play a role in the development of alcoholism, along with sociocultural and physiological components. It has been difficult, however, to pin down just what personality characteristics are involved, and why they should lead to this particular disorder. Studies in this area have produced a wide variety of disparate findings; a review of the literature indicates that nearly every personality characteristic has been implicated in alcoholism in one study or another. Nevertheless, during the past decade substantial progress has been made in isolating personality factors involved in alcoholism. In this chapter the major studies contributing to this progress will be discussed.
