Abstract

This introductory chapter contains: a summary of some basic chemical concepts and a brief survey of techniques used to probe the electronic structure of molecules and other molecular properties. These two aspects then lead naturally into a discussion of the way in which the wave mechanics of electrons in molecules can be employed to deepen insight into the nature of the chemical bond.
