Abstract
This chapter describes some of the techniques used in an in-depth psychiatric evaluation of a child, and provides rationales for their use. A thorough evaluation enables the diagnostician to understand the biological, intrapsychic, and environmental factors that have produced the existing symptom complex, to make a diagnosis, and to formulate a practical treatment plan that will be of the greatest benefit to the child and his or her family.
