Abstract
The Schrödinger cat paradox has fascinated physicists since it was introduced in 1935.1 Recently this problem has been considered in the context of a superposition of macroscopically distinguishable coherent states.2 These cat-like states have been shown to display many interesting nonclassical features including interference and squeezing. However, the experimental generation and detection of such states have proven to be difficult.3,4 We present an experimental study of a cat-like state in the form of a radial wave packet excited in an atom.
