Abstract

Hantaviruses belong to a recently recognized genus within the family Bunyaviridae. The prototype is Hantaan virus, causative agent of Korean hemorrhagic fever of Korea. This virus was first described in 1978(60); since then several related viruses have been recovered from humans, rodents, and other small mammals. Human disease caused by these viruses is characterized by acute fever, a tubular renal lesion, and in some instances a life-threatening capillary leak syndrome, often accompanied by hemorrhagic manifestations.
