Abstract
We studied the spreading behaviour of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu on W(110). For the ferromagnetic materials a one monolayer (ML) thick film spreads over the substrate surface (“unrolling carpet mechanism”). For Cu we observe the simultaneous spreading of a 2 and a 1 ML thick film. We observe anisotropic spreading for all four metals.
