Abstract
The fact that our Symposium organizer, Dr. Karen Hughes, asked me to give this address made it obvious to me that she did not want an introductory talk that dealt specifically with plant tissue culture. This was obvious because what I know about the subject comes from reading and listening rather than from participating in its practice.
