Abstract

Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders, affecting from 1 to 2% of the population or some two to four million Americans (National Commission for the Control of Epilepsy and Its Consequences, 1978). Epilepsy can seriously affect an individual’s quality of life because of its potential to impair cognition, personality, and behavior (Dodrill, 1981; Hermann & Whitman, 1984). Because the majority of cases (some 75–80%) begin before the age of 18, epilepsy can be considered to be a disorder of largely childhood and adolescent onset and to, therefore, have the potential to seriously compromise important aspects of cognitive, social, and behavioral development.
