General Issues in the Prevention of AIDS in Women

  • Chapter
Women at Risk

Part of the book series: AIDS Prevention and Mental Health ((APMH))

Abstract

As many authors in this volume indicate, women are increasingly represented among AIDS cases in the United States and are the demographic group most rapidly becoming infected. Further, most HIV transmission that takes place now, both in the United States and globally, occurs during heterosexual intercourse. Worldwide, it is estimated that 71% of HIV transmission has occurred through heterosexual contact (Ehrhardt, 1992).
