Abstract
The syndrome of Legionnaires’ disease was first recognized at the 1976 American Legion Convention in Philadelphia where 221 Legionnaires contracted pneumonia and 34 died. The causative agent was identified as an aerobic gramnegative bacterium, subsequently named Legionella pneumophila. 1 Although the family Legionellaceae comprises more than 40 species, L. pneumophila remains the most common species implicated in human disease and therefore will be the focus of this discussion.
