Abstract
Various aspects of IDDM have been extensively studied in different regions of the world during the last decades. IDDM prevalence and incidence data plotted on the map of the world cover vast areas in all populated parts of the globe (Figure 1). Nevertheless, there is an enormous territory that remains a “blank space” or “terra incognita” on the epidemiological map of IDDM. This “terra incognita” is Russia and most of the Republics of the former USSR.
