The Plasma Concentration and Renal Handling of Taurine in Healthy Children and in Pediatric Patients with Disturbed Sulfur Metabolism

Taurine in Health and Disease

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 359))

Abstract

In humans, taurine biosynthesis in liver is considered to be negligible. Therefore taurine could be conditionally essential for human infants and children (6). However, only a few studies have reported taurine values in healthy children as a function of age or in children suffering from diseases that might influence sulfur metabolism.
