The Retroviridae

Part of the book series: The Viruses ((VIRS))

Abstract

The discovery that cancer could be induced in chickens by filtered subcellular or acellular tumor extracts launched the beginning of viral oncology in the early 20th century (Rous, 1910). Although it was not known how the filterable material induced malignancies in animals, the word “virus” (Latin = poison or slime) was coined in the 1890s for agents that were causally associated with tumors. The first virus that induced tumors in chickens was thus designated as the Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) after its discoverer Peyton Rous (Rous, 1911). However, it took several decades before this virus was recognized as a prototype of the RNA-containing tumor viruses.
