Phase Transfer Catalyzed Polycondensation

  • Chapter
New Methods for Polymer Synthesis

Abstract

In many situations where two species cannot react because they are separated by an interface, the lack of activity has been overcome by using the technique of “Phase Transfer Catalysis” (PTC), which allows the reaction to occur, sometimes in very selective ways. This technique, the name of which was proposed by Starks in 1971,(1) was developed nearly at the same time by two other pioneers: Makosza(2) and Brandström.(3) During the last twenty years, PTC has become a very active subject of research with deep implications especially in preparative organic, inorganic, and polymer chemistry,(4–9) because it has the advantages of being extremely simple and economical.
