Abstract
The work ethic is an important organizing principle in modern society. In this chapter we provide a brief summary of the role and functions of work in industrial western society. This is then followed by an examination of the status of the older worker within the labour market. Subsequently we discuss the emergence of retirement and early retirement and consider the way that older people adjust to retirement.
