Abstract
Perinatal mortality and maternal mortality have been dramatically reduced in recent decades. There has probably been some reduction in the numbers of children with congenital abnormalities but, sadly, this has partly been achieved by antenatal detection and abortion, rather than by prevention. The main hope that further reductions in these problems will be achieved in the future lies in the wide application of preconception counselling.
