Abstract
There has been a relentless ever-increasing interest in immunology as providing answers to many problems in medical science. Indeed, in recent years much exciting progress has been made in understanding the complex fetomaternal immunological interactions which occur normally in pregnancy and allow the genetically disparate fetus the privilege of evading transplant rejection reactions in the potentially hostile maternal environment (Faulk and McIntyre, 1983; Johnson, 1984; Clark, 1985; Johnson et al., 1986). However, in the context of chorion-villus sampling, the most important role for immunology has been as a tool — that is, the provision of reagents to identify discrete cell populations by immunohistology and immunocytology. This can now best be done using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) reactive with cell surface differentiation antigens, whereas previous reagents lacked the requisite degree of specificity and sensitivity. However, the situation is yet far from ideal, as will be illustrated.
