Approaches, models and techniques

Abstract

Chapter 3 has described the different histories of the professions. It illustrates how medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, the three paramedical professions, dietetics and social work have each developed their own identity over the years. During this time some have also developed their own models. Indeed the concept of a model is now thought to be an important issue in many of the professions. A ‘model’ represents a set of ideas derived from various fields of study which integrate elements of theory and practice. It influences the way people view their job and therefore how they work. This has implications for the consumer, namely the patient and his family. Their experiences of health care will depend upon the models (and hence practices) of the health workers they encounter.
