Abstract
How does one grow up in a dysfunctional family? Cope with intense stress throughout one’s childhood? Raise oneself because no parent is really available? How does one do all this and not become severely emotionally impaired? When asked these questions, transcenders respond matter-of-factly with, “I did what I had to do”; “Doesn’t everyone do what I did?”; “I’m no different from anyone else.” Transcenders, though, are different. They are different from the child who grows up in the same or similar circumstances and becomes severely emotionally ill, extremely dependent, or delinquent. They’re also different from the emotionally healthy child who grows up in a loving, nurturing family.
