Abstract

Perhaps the most awesome storms on earth are tornadoes. Who can forget in “The Wizard of Oz” the sight of the black funnel sweeping down out of the sky as Dorothy tries to get into the storm cellar. Sure it was magic, just a nylon stocking filled with sand and a bowl of dust, but that didn’t detract from the illusion. Up there on the screen it looked like the real thing, giving the moviegoers from New York to Los Angeles a taste of the awesome power of a twister.
