Severity of the Parent to F1 Graft-Versus-Host Reaction in Irradiated Germfree Mice

Abstract

Lethally irradiated mice protected with allogeneic hemopoietic cells do not survive as long as those protected with syngeneic hemopoietic cells due to a “secondary disease.” This observation was first made by Barnes and Loutit in 1954 (l,2), and “secondary disease” was more fully characterized by Congdon and Urso in 1957 (5). This disease is primarily due to an immune reaction of grafted cells against the host tissues, the graft-versus-host (GVH) reaction (10). Uphoff (l5,l6) demonstrated a similar lesion in lethally irradiated F1 hybrid mice which had been treated with parental strain bone marrow. Schwartz, Upton, and Congdon (13) first described the “foreign spleen reaction,” a GVH disease resulting from injection of parental spleen cells into sublethally irradiated F, hybrid mice.
