Mechanisms of Pain

  • Chapter
Defeating Pain

Abstract

Scientist-philosophers began the process of discovery by thinking about their own sensations; then they searched the nervous system for mechanisms that would create such sensations. They made a series of assumptions about the nature of sensations and looked for mechanisms that would fulfill the assumptions. The result is the basis of classical philosophy and science. Now a new science is appearing that depends on a reexamination of the old assumptions.
