Abstract

“ ‘H’ is for heaven; ‘H’ is for hell; ‘H’ is for heroin.” So begins the 1964 book, The Road to H by Chein et al. This book, published over 20 years ago, is still one of the most comprehensive social-psychological studies of street use of heroin by adolescents. Much of what was written then is still true today. What has changed is the tremendous increase in our knowledge concerning the action of heroin and other narcotic analgesics in the brain.
