Abstract

The synthesis of haem is obligatory for all aerobic cells because of the importance of this prosthetic group for a variety of metabolic processes. It is an iron-chelated tetrapyrrole that facilitates electron-transfer reactions vital for energy exchange and also catalyses the introduction of molecular oxygen into a broad range of endogenous and exogenous substrates which assists in diminishing their biological activity and enhancing their rate of excretion from the body.
