Abstract

The original Rechtschaffen and Kales sleep scoring manual of 1968, commonly known as the “R and K” rules, was used to classify the different stages sleep and wakefulness until 2007 at which point the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) created a new scoring manual. This chapter briefly summarizes the new AASM scoring rules for staging sleep and associated events in adults and pediatric population as well as technical specifications.
