Abstract

Approximately 500,000 men undergo vasectomy in the United States each year. Although it is generally considered a safe and effective method of contraception, over 30% of paid malpractice claims against urologists involve vasectomy-related complications. Thus, it is imperative that urologists be well-versed in the management of men seeking permanent sterilization. The key to avoiding problems is thorough preoperative counseling of the patient, with appropriate documentation and consent. Meticulous operative technique and follow-up will also help to minimize unfortunate outcomes.
